A Bit About Me

Jose de Wit practices in all areas of U.S. immigration and nationality law, including employment-, family-, and humanitarian-based petitions, waivers and inadmissibility issues, and naturalization. In particular, Jose's experience focuses on representing entrepreneurs and investors, startups, and established businesses as well as outstanding and talented individuals in connection with employment-based nonimmigrant (temporary) and immigrant (green card) visa petitions and related matters. Jose also has extensive experience litigating immigration matters in immigration court, the Board of Immigration Appeals, and the federal courts, including mandamus actions to compel federal agency decisions in unreasonably delayed immigration matters and appeals from removal decisions to the federal circuit courts.

An immigrant born and raised in Guatemala himself, Jose understands the immigrant process from firsthand experience. He discovered his passion for helping other foreign nationals pursue the American Dream while studying law at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law, where he assisted clients with humanitarian applications as a member of the California Asylum Representation Clinic and served as Executive Editor of the Berkeley Journal of International Law. Before founding De Wit Immigration Law, Jose practiced commercial litigation and immigration law at both boutique and large international firms in California and Florida, and has practiced immigration law exclusively since 2017.

Jose became an attorney following a successful first career as an award-winning newspaper reporter and editor, covering government accountability and public education in New Mexico. He lives in North Miami, where he enjoys cooking, gardening, woodworking, and biking, paddling, and road-tripping across Florida with his wife, Karla; son, Benji; and pitbull-boxer mix, Priscilla.
